Gavi Ligure - Journey into the Middle Ages

Our visit focuses on the Church of San Giacomo and the remaining medieval vestiges of the settlement

Gavi Ligure is not only a land of wines, which are excellent by the way, but also a city of ancient foundation. Already a Roman settlement, it became a crossroads for trade, pilgrimages, and armies starting from the end of the 5th-6th century. We find evidence of this role in the medieval fortifications of the 10th century, probably the original nucleus of what would become the famous Fort, and later, due to defensive needs, in the construction of the very walls that still mark its northern side today.

What we will do: Our itinerary starts from the ancient walls, passing through the "Portino", and arrives at the Parish Church, dedicated, not by chance, to St. James. Although it has been altered several times over the centuries, St. James is one of the largest and best-preserved examples of Romanesque church in Upper Monferrato. Its existence has been documented since the second half of the 12th century.

We will then visit the interior, noting all the still clearly visible traces of the original layout along with contemporary works of art, such as the 14th-century fresco of the Virgin Mary, without neglecting the most important works even if from a later period.
The visit can, if desired, continue with a short walk through the village to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace, with the connected Franciscan friars' convent. The church stands on what was originally an oratory dedicated to St. Bernardino of Siena who preached here (15th century), initially accompanied by a hostel for pilgrims heading either to Rome or to Santiago de Compostela.
For those who wish, it will be possible to purchase local wines and the lesser-known but equally tasty Gavi amaretti.
