A treasure of 15th-century Spanish painting is kept in the Cathedral and we will reveal its adventurous origins

Acqui, originally "Carystum," the ancient capital of the Ligurian Statielli, became in Roman times Aquae Statiellae (2nd century BC). Over the centuries, the city has become layered, and each era has left its mark. In addition to the Roman ruins, the Middle Ages is one of the periods with the most visible remains.
What we will see: our itinerary includes arrival at the cathedral after a short walk through the historic center, passing through what remains of the medieval village, we will reach the climb leading to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Acqui is one of the oldest dioceses in Piedmont. The first bishop was Saint Maggiorino in the 4th century.
The church was consecrated on November 11, 1067, by Bishop-Count Guido, venerated as the city's patron saint. The church was built by Lombard craftsmen in the form of a Romanesque building with a Latin cross plan and projecting transept. Originally with three naves, they became five in the 18th century, with side chapels. Over the centuries it has undergone modifications and enrichments, especially in the 1700s, but the oldest structure has retained its strong spiritual character. We will visit the entire church, in particular the crypt, and then move on to the Chapter Hall, where we can admire a rare 15th-century Spanish-made triptych: the Virgin of Montserrat.
A work by the most famous Spanish painter of the 15th century, Bartolomeo de Cardenas, known for his Hispano-Flemish painting style. A piece of rare beauty whose history we will discover. We will immerse ourselves in the history of 15th-century Monferrato, its economy, its trade, the importance of Acqui as a trading center, and its merchant families.
